Description:

Two Chinese Export Armorial Porcelain Plates, 18th century, octagonal plates decorated in the famille rose palette, with rims adorned with floral sprays within gilt spearhead borders, one plate centered with the Arms of Meares impaling Downs (?) with the motto "OMNIA FORTUNAE COMMITTO" [I commit all things to fortune], (minor rim chips, rim repairs),dia. 8 5/8; the other plate centered with the Arms of Clarke of Sanford, (repaired rim chips),dia. 8 1/2 in.

Provenance: Estate of Peter Rosenberg; Arms of Meares plate: Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, with paper label affixed to the bottom, then estate of Peter Rosenberg.
Estimate $400-500

Arms of Meares plate: Has a few minute rim chips in addition to the repaired rim chips which are barely detectable; Literature: Howard, "Chinese Armorial Porcelain," vol. I, p. 514, pl. 23.
Arms of Clarke plate: One repair on rim detectable under black light, Literature: Howard, "Chinese Armorial Porcelain," vol. I, p. 503.
