Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (Danish/American, 1850-1921)

Portrait of the Screw Steamer OREGONIAN. Signed and dated "A Jacobsen 1910 31 Palisade Av. West Hoboken NJ" l.r., vessel identified on the bow and stern. Oil on artist board, 17 3/4 x 30 in., in a later molded gold-painted gesso frame. Condition: Scattered paint loss to upper background sky and lower edge, few spots of paint loss u.l. sky, board slightly bowed.

Provenance: Family descent of Captain Scott Blanchard (1883-1959),who served as captain of the Oregonian while employed by the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company c. 1910.

Note: The USS Oregonian was a cargo ship built by the Delaware River Iron Shipbuilding and Engine Works, Chester, Pennsylvania. She was launched in 1901 and was operated by the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company until August 15, 1918, when she was commissioned into the Naval Overseas Transportation Service at Norfolk, Virginia, for a time, then decommissioned and returned to her owners in April of 1919.

Scattered paint loss to upper background sky and lower edge, few spots of paint loss u.l. sky, this area is thinly painted and gold underpaint shows through. The artist board is held in a later somewhat ill-fitting frame and slightly bowed so that the edge of it shows at the top of the aperture.
