James Sanford Ellsworth (American, 1802/03-1874)

Small Portrait of a Woman Wearing a Ruffled Bonnet, c. 1845. Unsigned. Watercolor on heavy paper watermarked "TWP 1842,"depicting a half-length profile portrait, highlighted with shaded gray cloud-like formations, 3 1/8 x 2 5/8 in., in a period rosewood veneer frame. Condition: Minor toning, glue residue at l.l. corner.

Provenance: Lucy B. Mitchell collection, then by family descent.

Exhibitions: This portrait miniature is listed and described in The paintings of James Sanford Ellsworth, itinerant folk artist, 1802-1873, catalog of an exhibition presented by the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection, Williamsburg, Virginia, October 13--December 1, 1974.
