Käthe Kollwitz (German, 1867-1945)

Two Portraits: Selbstbildnis, 1919, possibly from the edition of 175 (Knesebeck, 143Ib); and Nachdenkende Frau, 1920, possibly from the edition printed by Richter (Knesebeck, 161c). Both signed "Käthe Kollwitz" in pencil l.r. (Selbstbildnis very faintly or possibly erased). Lithographs on paper, image sizes to 13 1/2 x 11 1/2 in. (34.2 x 29.2 cm),framed.
Condition: Toning near edges, minor handling creases.

Provenance: Frau Sotheby's New York, Sale 7888, Lot 192, May 3, 2003; Selbstbildnis Sotheby's New York, Sale 7787, Lot 128, May 4, 2002, then both to a private Massachusetts collection.

Both sheets are hinged near the upper corners.

Selbstbildnis sheet measures 15 5/8 x 12 1/8 in., and is wove paper. The image measures13 1/2 x 11 1/2 in.

Frau sheet measures16 3/8 x 13 1/4 in. with all deckled edges. Image measures 11 3/8 x 10 1/2 in. The paper is a Japan paper, possibly mulberry.
