George Glenn Newell (American, 1870-1947),View through the Trees, dated and signed "1919, -G. Glenn Newell-" l.c. and inscribed "...MUG SALE, SALMAGUNDI...1918 G...n Newell pxt." on the bottom; Walter Granville-Smith (American, 1870-1938),Lake View, signed "W. Granville Smith 1918" l.c. Painted porcelain mugs, ht. 6 in. (15.2 cm).
Condition: Surface grime.
N.B. In order to raise funds for its library, the Salmagundi Club began auctioning mugs painted by its members. Members painted no more than 24 mugs each year, which were then fired by the Volmar Pottery. This tradition continued until 1923.(1)
