Jefferson, Thomas (1743-1826) Four-language Ship's Papers for the Brig Maria, 10 July 1804,Countersigned by James Madison (1751-1836).
Single large sheet of laid paper, with the text printed in four columns, each a different language: French, Spanish, English, and Dutch; allowing the Brig Maria, lying in the port of Boston, weighing 181 tons, permission to travel to Labrador and the Mediterranean, its master Joseph Saunders, its ballast sea stones, signed in the center by Jefferson and Madison, with two paper seals, the sheet browned, mounted on silk, and double-glazed frame, glass on back cracked, 20 1/4 x 16 in.
