Description:

A Rare Maori Carved Wood Door Lintel, c. 19th century, two females and one male with arms upraised and standing on a manaia-headed base representing Papatuanuko, the earth mother, with a background of pierced spirals, "to allow light into this world," one original haliotis inlay remains, (cracks, minor wood loss, back with late reinforcement),lg. 57 1/2 x ht. 20 1/2 in.

Provenance: Collected by the present owner's grandfather in the South Pacific during World War II.
