Description:

American School, Early 20th Century

House by the Railroad Tracks. Unsigned, dated "1914" in the foundation. Gouache on paper with rule-embossed outlines and details, 21 x 38 in., in a faux bois painted wood frame. Condition: Repaired tears l.l., minor light stains.

Provenance: Walters-Benisek, purchased in 1999.

Note: See note lot 13, for work by the same artist. This work reportedly depicts an area in northern Vermont, a claim substantiated by the English and French words on the railroad crossing signage.
Estimate $8,000-12,000

At the time the work was executed the paper was lengthened (by the artist) on both ends about 3 1/4 in. to accommodate the painting. Conservation has been done with rice paper to strengthen the joinery and to repair the approx. 5 tears at l.l. The smallest is about 1/2 in., the longest is about 7 in.
Some light moisture stains, l.r. road area.
