Safavid-style Polychrome Lacquered Papier-mache Casket, Iran, Qajar period, 18th century, spherical, possibly used for perfumed powders, the cover painted with nightingales perched on rosebuds branches within concentric borders of geometric foliated design and leaf-form cartouches, embellished with gold-cuts appliqués, gilt knob finial, the rims with subtle indentation for locking, the lower half of the casket decorated with similar foliate motif, with plain, lacquered milky white interior and black base, dia. 7 in.
