Signed, dated, and numbered "R. Tait McKenzie/1918/ No 1." in the bronze
by the figure's heels, titled at the front of the base, incised "R.B.W." at the back of the base.
Bronze with brown patina, height 8 1/2 in. (21.5 cm),base 3 1/4 x 2 3/4 in. (8.5 x 7.1 cm).
Condition: Minor surface abrasions and wear, dust and dirt to interstices.
N.B. An article in The Pennsylvania Gazette on October 15, 1920, reproduced a review by Sir Philip Gibbs for the London Chronicle of McKenzie's summer exhibition at the Fine Art Galleries on New Bond Street, singling out Winded along with Plunger and Shotputter among the series "Athletes in Action," describing the group as restrained yet vigorous, reviving the attitude of Greece in contemporary sport.
