Note: This work was commissioned by Henry Sayles Francis, curator of prints and paintings at the Cleveland Museum of Art from 1930-1970, for his wife, Frances M. Francis. A letter signed dated December 18, 1939, by Alexander Calder asking whether or not Mr. Francis received the pin mailed on November 24, and whether or not it was satisfactory, accompanies the lot. The Calder Foundation assigned this pin application no. A26064 in July 2013.
