Large Painted Cast Iron Massachusetts State Seal Plaque, late 19th century, shield-shaped plaque depicting an Algonquian man with bow and arrow, the arrow pointed downward, signifying peace, and a five-point white star to the left of the figure's head representing one of the original thirteen colonies, over a blue banner inscribed with the state motto "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem" (With a sword, she seeks quiet peace under liberty),ht. 35, wd. 25 1/2 in.

Note: This plaque once hung in the Salem, Massachusetts, Armory, which was destroyed by fire in 1982. The Armory was constructed between 1890 and 1908 for the Second Corps of Cadets on the property of Colonel Francis Peabody.
