Attributed to Robert Salmon (Britain and Massachusetts, 1775-after 1845)

Shipping off Whitehaven. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 12 1/4 x 17 1/4 in., in a later molded giltwood frame. Condition: Relined, scattered retouch.

Note: Maritime painter Robert Salmon, called the "Father of Luminism" in America, was born in Whitehaven, England. He lived and painted in several seaside towns in England and Scotland before coming to America in 1829. He settled in Boston on Marine Railway Wharf, at the time when growth in the harbor was booming. His work was enormously popular and sought after by prominent Bostonians. He stayed in Boston until 1840 when his eyesight began to fail, then returned to England where he died, sometime after 1845.
