Early New Haven, Connecticut, Needlework Sampler, "LOUISA HOTCHKISS BORN MARCH 3 AD MDCCLVI" [1756], the small sampler worked in silk threads on a linen ground with rows of alphabets and signature over the lower register panel depicting four bowls, (toning, fading, minor stitch loss),9 1/2 x 7 3/4 in., in a later frame.
Note: Louisa Hotchkiss was born on March 3, 1756 in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, the oldest of eleven children born to John and Susanna (Jones) Hotchkiss. Louisa married Daniel Bishop (1750-1800) on January 12, 1777, in New Haven, where they resided and had six children. She died on March 17, 1822, in New Haven.
