Signed "Franz Johnston" l.l., titled and signed on the reverse.
Oil on canvas, 18 1/4 x 23 7/8 in. (46.3 x 60.5 cm),framed.
Condition: Craquelure, minor paint loss, surface grime.

Provenance: From the artist's daughter Wenawae to Jean MacGregor Fiske, then by family descent to the present owner.

N.B. Canadian artist Franz Johnston was an original member of the Group of Seven, artists who began working together informally c. 1913 in Toronto, Ontario, and who were dedicated to creating a distinctly Canadian school of art with a commitment to native subjects. Working in an Impressionist style, they emphasized direct contact with nature. The Group assumed its official name c. 1919, receiving support and encouragement from the National Gallery of Canada. Frank Johnston left the group in 1921 to move to Winnipeg to become Director of the Winnipeg School of Art. The Group of Seven remained active until the early 1930s when they disbanded in favor of the more inclusive Canadian Group of Painters.

Abrasions along frame liner; canvas deformation to u.r. corner; moderate craquelure throughout, particularly to l.l. quadrant; subtle varnish inconsistencies; alligatoring, primarily to l.l. quadrant; no additional condition issues to report.
