Jean Baptist Lodewyck Maes (Flemish, 1794-1856)

The Repentant Magdalene
Signed and inscribed "MAES Roma/J.B.W." l.r.
Oil on canvas, 40 x 35 in. (102.0 x 89.0 cm),in a period frame with arched liner.
Condition: Trimmed and laid onto Masonite, craquelure, masking varnish, paint loss, frame abrasions.

Provenance: Purchased in Italy by Mr. Phillips of Meriden, Connecticut, passed to Mr. H.J. Meinke of Meriden, purchased by Mrs. Carmel Luca Cerasale on October 3, 1942.

N.B. The lot is accompanied by a framed sheet providing provenance and an old snapshot showing a close-up of the signature.
