Description:

Framed Gouache Panel, China, 19th century, in the manner of Tinqua (fl. 1830s-1860s),square, painted with a geometric blossom ground and a shaped central medallion depicting Mandarin officials and ladies at leisure under a pavilion within a garden, the figures embellished with painted ivory faces and silk garments, the ruyi border painted with flowers, fruit, and butterflies on a silver ground; originally part of the interior fitting of an export lacquer shawl box, 18 1/4 x 18 1/4, frame 24 1/4 x 24 1/4 in.

Provenance: Formerly in collection of Carl L. Crossman.
