Bust-length Portrait of a Lady
Unsigned, inscribed in ink "Carolus Durand" on the reverse, inscribed "Durand" in
pencil and with a label from James Bourlet & Sons, Ltd. (London),affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 30 3/8 x 25 1/4 in., framed.
Condition: Retouch, patch reinforcements, paint loss, abrasions, surface grime.

N.B. A well-known London firm of looking glass and picture frame manufacturers, James Bourlet was founded in 1850 by patriarch Arthur James Bourlet (c. 1828-1895). In 1896, the firm became James Bourlet & Sons, and then operated as Bourlet & Sons, Ltd., between 1911 and 1983.

A label on the back of the frame from the London firm of James Bourlet & Sons, Ltd.. 17 & 18 Nassau Street, Mortimer Street W., bears the number "L 26669." James Bourlet & Sons, Ltd, was in business at 17 Nassau Street (later named Titian House) from 1864 until1974. and also at 18 Nassau Street beginning in 1895.
