Period Photograph of and English Exercise by Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich, c. 1917, the photograph depicting the tsarevich next to nursing sister Klavdia Mikhaelovna Bitner outside the governor's mansion in Tobolsk, and taken by Bitner's niece, approx. sight size 3 1/2 x 2; the exercise on paper printed with a canteen and reads "Dear Kate, I would be very pleased if you would let Tolly [?] come with you. Gertie and Poppet also. Please come as soon as you can as I have nothing to do. Alexis," approx. sight size 5 3/4 x 3 1/2, in a common tabernacle frame, 24 x 17 3/4 in.
Provenance: The letter was purchased from Marvin Lyons, Executive Secretary of the Vorontsov Palace and Corps of Pages Memorial Trust. A copy of a letter from Lyons accompanies the lot. The English Exercise from Clive Farahar and Sophie Dupre and purportedly belonged to tutor Sidney Gibbes.
