Description:

Fine Edwardian Carved Agate and Enamel Pendulette, Cartier, Paris, the rotating ball dial with Roman numeral indicators and rose-cut diamond star to indicate the time, atop the group of the "Three Wise Monkeys," two with rose-cut diamond eyes, all on a cylindrical guilloche enamel base with garland accent, ht. 6 1/4 in., no. 3006, French maker's marks and guarantee stamps, signed CARTIER on base plate and edge, and PARIS 187, (minor losses).

Provenance: Purchased at Cartier, Paris, in the early 20th century by Mrs. Charles B. Alexander, then to her daughter Mary Alexander Whitehouse, then to her daughter, the consignor. The Alexander mansion was located at 4 West 58th Street, New York, and was one of the most lavish homes of the Gilded Age; it included a ballroom to accommodate 500 people.

Not in running condition. Movement with evidence of rust and requires a complete overhaul. The extent of the rust is not known, as the movement has not been removed from the clock. Oxidation and surface scratches to bottom plate. Enamel with minor surface scratches, not obtrusive. One corner with chip to enamel down to metal (visible in cover photo),some flaking to white enamel, not down to metal. Garland: some enamel loss down to metal in three spots, a leaf tip and two leaf faces, and two other leaves with losses. some minor flaking/losses to x motifs, not to metal. Minor surface scratches to enamel under the feet. Chip to toe on "speak no evil" monkey.
