Beginning at the bottom in the French royal army as a regular enlisted soldier, Jourdan rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a Marshall of France under Napoleon I. Jourdan also fought in the American Revolutionary war, serving in the Siege of Savannah as a seventeen year old. He served during the French Revolutionary wars as well, and fought in the Napoleonic wars.
