First edition, octavo, in two volumes, ex dono authoris, presentation copy to Edward Everett (1794-1865),politician and president of Harvard, with his bookplate in both volumes, bound in contemporary textured blue cloth.
In addition to the wealth of very early material on the American west, Sketches is also memorable for its "Indian-Hating" chapters in volume two which Melville used as a source for The Confidence-Man.
