Danfrie was a successful graphic artist, engraver, and type designer, who cut bookbinding tools and worked for the French mint designing coins. In this work he shows off his remarkable Civilite types, patterned after formal French handwriting, his draughtsmanship, with the engraved and woodcut illustrations, and his skills as an inventor and instrument-maker, with the graphometer, a surveying instrument.
