Walton, William (1740-1824)A Narrative of the Captivity and Sufferings of Benjamin Gilbert and his Family, Who were surprised by the Indians, and taken from their farms, on the frontiers of Pennsylvania, in the spring, 1780. Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by Joseph Cruikshank in Market Street, between Second and Third Streets, 1784.
Octavo, first edition, collated complete, sometimes attributed to Thomas Austin, in a signed Bradstreet binding, three quarter red morocco and marbled paper boards, contents with slight spotting, a large copy with many deckle edges throughout.
Fifteen members of Benjamin Gilbert's Quaker family were abducted by Mohawk Indians in 1780, including Gilbert, his wife, children, their spouses, a hired man, a neighbor, and two grandchildren. They were not freed until September 28, 1782. Gilbert did not survive the ordeal.
