Description:
Sumner, Charles (1811-1874) Autographed Note. Framed with two portraits, "On board Steamer Vanderbilt, near the Narrows, 22nd May '58. Dear Longfellow, Goodbye!" signed, Charles Sumner, 14 x 7 in. overall, not examined out of frame.
Sumner, Senator from Massachusetts, was attacked in the Senate chamber by South Carolina representative Preston Brooks, who beat him into unconsciousness with a cane fitted with a metal head in retaliation for a scathing oration Sumner had delivered attacking South Carolina's stance on slavery and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. This note was written on the second anniversary of that attack, which occurred on May 22, 1856. Longfellow and Sumner were friends.
