Description:

Phebe Osborn's Wallpaper-covered Dome-top Trinket Box, America, c. 1835, rectangular box with hinged lid, the exterior covered with sage green wallpaper with white and black stripe, leaf, flower, and wavy line varnish designs, the front with the initials "PO" revealed through a small glass window, the interior with two compartments, lined with newspaper and containing a small card with a pencil drawing of a gentleman on bended knee before his lady with a printed poem on the reverse, and a small child's printed "Book of Riddles" with the inscription "Henry Osborne from Grandmother Osborne," ht. 4 1/4, wd. 6 1/4, dp. 3 7/8 in.


Provenance: Purchased from Henry T. Osborne, at the Osborne homestead in Weare, New Hampshire. Henry was a direct descendant of Moses Osborn, a cabinetmaker working in Weare, New Hampshire.

Note: Phebe Osborn was born on February 13, 1824, in Weare, Hillsboro County, New Hampshire, the second child of six or seven born to Samuel (1789-1838) and Anna (Hoag, 1799-1874) Osborn. She was the granddaughter of the cabinetmaker Moses Osborn.
