Not Without a Certain Picturesqueness As It Crossed the Stream
/An Illustration for The Fair God. Signed and dated "Eric Pape/97" l.r., estate stamped on the backing paper. Oil en grisaille on unstretched canvas, 24 1/4 x 15 5/8 in., framed. Condition: Natural pigment fluorescence, subtle rippling.

Provenance: Through the estate of the artist.

N.B. This painting was reproduced via photogravure in The Fair God, A Tale of the Conquest of Mexico by Lew Wallace, illustrated by Eric Pape, published in two volumes by Houghton Mifflin and Company in 1899. The lot is accompanied by color copies of the cover of the book (Vol. I),the title page, the illustration and text on page 8, and a partial list of illustrations (p. xv).
