Note: While best known, of course, for being the 31st President of the United States, Hoover was also a noted geologist and mining expert. He graduated with a degree in geology from Stanford University in 1895 (having enrolled in 1891, Stanford's first year),and became a well-regarded mining consultant, publishing several important works on the topic. The present work was a translation of the 1556 edition completed in partnership with Hoover's wife, Lou Henry Hoover, also a recipient of a Stanford geology degree.
