Sterling Silver Presentation Ewer, Black Starr & Frost, makers, New York, late 19th/early 20th century, with engraved presentation under the spout: "Presented to Major General Daniel Appleton/By His Devoted Friends...," which goes on to list ten individuals including Cornelius Vanderbilt, maker's marks on base, (minor dents),ht. 17 1/4 in., approx. 53 troy oz.
Note: In his day, Major General Daniel Appleton (1852-1929) was a notable publisher at the firm D. Appleton & Co., which was started by his grandfather. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1871 and worked his way through the ranks to become Colonel and Commander of the New York Guard's Seventh Regiment and was awarded the rank of Brevet Major General in recognition of his more than 40 years of service to the Seventh Regiment.
