Watercolor and ink heightened with white on paper, sheet size 13 7/8 x 23 1/8 in. (35.3 x 58.7 cm),framed.

N.B. The Austrailian Dictionary of Biography, produced by the National Centre of Biography at the Australian National University, provides an extensive entry on the artist, from which these highlights are drawn. Brierly was born in Chester, England, and died in London. Educated at the Henry Sass Art School, Bloomsbury Street, London, he also studied naval architecture and possibly navigation at Plymouth. Brierly was commissioned as a war artist by the Illustrated London News during the Crimean War, 1854-55; he had commissions from the royal family, and made several cruises with the duke of Edinburgh between 1863-69, including an around the world trip in the Galatea. (A small island in the Louisiade Archipelago near New Guinea is named after him.) Brierly was a marine painter to Queen Victoria and to the Royal Yacht Squadron from 1874, and served as curator of the Painted Hall at Greenwich from 1881. He was knighted in 1885.
