.B. Dasburg first arrived in Taos, New Mexico in January 1918, at the invitation of Mabel Dodge Luhan, a wealthy patron and avant-garde literary bohemian. (1) Over the next decade and a half, Dasburg split his time between and Woodstock, New York, and Taos, and in 1935, chose to reside near Taos full-time.

The present work shows the influences of two important modernists on both sides of the Atlantic-Paul Cezanne, whose works Dasburg first encountered in 1909 while living in Paris; and John Marin, whom he was introduced to in New York and befriended in Taos over the summers of 1929 and 1930. (2) Though Dasburg worked in a variety of medium, ink and pastel are considered by many to be his most engaging, as they showcase his skill in creating rhythmic lines.
