18kt Gold Hunter Case Watch by E. D. Johnson, London, serial no. 21010, sold by Tiffany, New York, January 1, 1870, the case marked Tiffany & Co., 18, and 21010 inside front and back components, enameled dial inscribed E. D. Johnson, London, Roman numerals, sunk seconds dial, fleur-de-lis blued steel hands, movement with brass dust cover inscribed E. D. Johnson Chronometer Maker to the Admiralty, 3/4 plate fully jeweled fusee movement with diamond endstone, split bi-metallic balance with brass timing screws, engraved balance cock with curved foot and No. 21010 engraved on the table and backplate engraved E. D. Johnson, 9 Wilmington Square, London, dia. 52 mm, accompanied by the original Tiffany bill of sale to Mr. J.P. Acker, January 1, 1870 for $65.55 and a copy of John Loring, Tiffany Timepieces.
This watch and bill of sale are illustrated in Loring, Tiffany Timepieces, pp. 66-7. This source states that the buyer of the present watch, Captain Acker, was a Hudson River steamboat operator who purchased seven watches at Tiffany's between 1865 and 1870 for a total of $1,215.
