Portrait of a Civil War Era Naval Officer. Signed and dated "Jos. Ames 1861" l.r. Oil on canvas, 36 1/2 x 29 in., in the original molded gilt-gesso frame. Condition: Canvas laid down, scratch u.r. and u.l., repaired tears with associated retouch, retouch around edges.

The canvas has been applied to cardboard, large repaired area on chest down through center of jacket, and right facing portion of head through hair, ear, and neck of jacket.
