Le Miroir
Signed and dated "Jan Cox 51" l.r., inscribed " 'Le Miroir' 51, Jan Cox" on the
stretcher and identified on labels from the Biennale de Menton and La Continental Mentès, Bruxelles, affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 23 3/4 x 31 1/2 in. (60.3 x 80 cm),framed.
Condition: Abrasions, craquelure, minor paint losses, surface grime.

N.B. Born in The Hague, Jan Cox moved to Antwerp in 1936 where he attended the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts. In 1945 he co-founded the group Jeune Peinture Belge with the aim of holding exhibitions of contemporary Belgian art throughout Europe. In 1948 Cox began exhibiting in the United States at Curt Valentin Gallery in New York. At the time of Le Miroir, Cox was living in Brussels. In 1956 he became Head of the Painting Department at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where he stayed until 1974.

Printed label for the Biennale de Menton from "Etat Belge/Belgische Staat" is filled out in ink and lists the painting's title as "De Spiegel." The second printed label, also filled out in ink, is from "La Continental Mentès," an art packing and shipping firm located at 125, Chausee d'Anvers, Bruxelles. It lists the destination of the painting to be Boston. There is also a printed label "Kunsthalle Basel, No. 2375" affixed to the stretcher. None of these labels bears any date.
