Steel Fusee Cutting Engine, France, mid-18th century, the cutter positioned by a bent steel spring and other adjustments made with flat thumbscrews, overall lg. 8 1/2 in.

Note: This tool is pictured and discussed in Crom #2, figure 912. It is very similar to the fusee-cutting engine shown in Thiout's 1741 catalogue (Crom #2 figure 99). There it is discussed that this tool has an unusual auxiliary cutter frame which swings below where the fusee being cut is mounted.
