American School, 19th Century

Illustration for "NYE PURE SPERM OIL." Unsigned. Watercolor and ink on card, 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 in., in a molded giltwood frame. Condition: Foxing, toning.

Note: Nye was a New Bedford, Massachusetts, company which produced whale and marine mammal oil from the late 19th and 20th century until 1978. It was named after William F. Nye who developed the fine lubricating oil. After it became illegal to import raw material from marine animals in 1972, Nye was permitted to deplete his inventory, which took about six years. Nye Lubricants currently produces synthetic lubricants.
