Description:

Arts & Crafts Opal, Demantoid, and Peridot Longchain and Pendant, Potter and Mellen, the necklace composed of cabochon black crystal opals highlighted by cushion-cut demantoid garnets suspending an opal pendant with peridot highlights, 14kt gold mount, lg. 57 and 1 5/8 in., brooch signed.

Note: Potter and Mellen, the later name of the Cleveland firm founded by Horace E. Potter in 1899, specialized in handwrought jewelry, silver, and brass hollowware. Potter was a graduate of the Cleveland School of Art, and exhibited with the Boston Society of Arts & Crafts at Copley in 1899. In 1907, Potter traveled to England to study at Ashbee's Guild of Handicraft, where he worked with Wilhelmina Stephan, a student of Alexander Fisher, one of the top enamelists of the Arts & Crafts movement. As a result, the design and ornament of Potter's jewelry exhibits the influence of the Guild jewelers. Potter returned to Cleveland and founded Potter Studios, with the idea of recreating the collaborative, interdisciplinary approach of the Guild.
