Three Piece Leslie Durbin Silver and Gold Mounted Dresser Set, London, 1957-62, comprising hand mirror, hair brush, and comb, each mounted with gold shells and kelp, the mirror with central mermaid figure, with a large merman below on handle, mirror lg. 11, brush lg. 9 3/4, comb lg. 7 3/4 in.

Note: Leslie Durbin, CBE, MVO (1913-2005) was arguably the most famous British silversmith of the 20th century. Durbin apprenticed under the great Arts & Crafts metalsmith and designer Omar Ramsden, and reached world-renowned status when he was commissioned by King George VI in 1943 to design a sword of honour to commemorate the conduct of the people of Stalingrad after the seven-month battle of 1942-43. This sword was presented to Stalin by Churchill at the 1943 Tehran conference between these two world leaders and President Roosevelt. Durbin also is famous for his designs representing the four parts of the United Kingdom for the Royal Mint's mid-1980s pound coins.
