N.B. Helen Allingham (nee Patterson) was born in the small village of Swadlincote in Derbyshire, England. As a child, Allingham developed an interest in art, inspired by her grandmother, Sarah Smith Herford, and aunt, Laura Herford, who were both artists. At seventeen, she enrolled at the Birmingham School of Design where she was exposed to the work of Frederick Walker, Sir Frederick Leighton, and John Everett Millais. While at school, Allingham worked as an illustrator to support herself and soon found a job working for the illustrated magazine, The Graphic. After marrying William Allingham in 1874, the couple eventually moved to Surrey where Allingham painted nostalgic views of the local cottages, in the medium she truly loved - watercolor.
