N.B. Homer's "The Iliad" was the inspiration for one of Bearden's four literary series created between 1945 and 1948. An exhibition of "The "Iliad" series was held at Niveau Gallery in November 1948. Stylistically, the works were consistent with his earlier literary series, where the colors were "prismatic, enclosed by the architectonics of the lines separating them" akin to the stained glass windows of Chartres cathedral.
