Mountain Landscape

Condition: Lined, tape to edges, retouch, craquelure with scattered lifting, surface grime.

N.B. Alfred Thompson Bricher grew up in Newburyport, a coastal town on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Bricher was largely self-taught although he attended the Lowell Institute in Boston. His earliest known work is from 1856; by 1860 he most likely had traveled to the Hudson River Valley to see first-hand the landscape that so inspired the artists of the Hudson River School. "Studying the scenery and the works of the major Hudson River painters, while perhaps looking over some of their shoulders, Bricher rapidly personalized the styles of Cole, Durand, Kensett and Gifford with amazing virtuosity." (Brown, p. 15). A wonderful example of his work from this time, this landscape is, at once, both accurate in detail and romantic in its depiction. It conveys the subtleties of light and a rich tonality emblematic of the Hudson River School.

Brown, Jeffrey R., assisted by Ellen W. Lee Alfred Thompson Bricher (Indianapolis: Indianapolis Museum of Art. 1973).

Estimate $15,000-20,000

The lining is adhered with glue or resin. The retouch is scattered dashes, strokes, and glazes, with more extensive areas within the middle ground in particular. The craquelure is visible and has some areas of cupping. The painting would benefit from cleaning.
