N.B. Julio Ferrer was born on the southern coast of Cuba in the town of Cienfuegos. He began formal art training from a young age in Havana, beginning with animation and cartoon drawing. He attended the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA),the national school for the arts in Havana, graduating at the age of nineteen. (1)
Ferrer's work frequently explores the strained relationship between the U.S. and Cuba under the trade embargo by depicting cultural and material commodities, such as Alberto Korda's iconic image of Che Guevara, Coca-Cola, and as in the present work, a classic 1950s Oldsmobile. Broadly speaking, Ferrer's body of work examines how images are appropriated and re-appropriated to suit political and cultural agendas, and the nature of the relationship between desire and forbidden exchange.
