Anglo-American School, 19th Century

Portrait of Children of Lord Gosford. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 12 1/4 x 15 1/2 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Canvas laid down, scattered retouch, small paint loss on shoulder of boy.

Provenance: Ex Washington County, Pennsylvania, Historical Society.

Note: By oral tradition this depicts the children of Lord Gosford, Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford (1776-1849) a British politician who was a Member of the House of Commons in Britain, and entered the House of Lords in 1811. In 1835 he became Lieutenant-Governor of Lower Canada.
