"Undercliff" Near Goldspring, New York, The Seat of General George P. Morris. Unsigned, date and scene identified in inscription on reverse reading Undercliff near Coldspring N.Y. The seat of General George P. Morris July 3 1842. Oil on canvas, 19 x 26 1/2 in. in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Minor retouch left edge. Note: The image was taken after the original drawing by W.H. Bartlett, which was engraved by J.T. Willmore and published London for the proprietors, by George Virtue, 26 Ivy Lane, in 1839.
The view shows General Morris's square white mansion called "Undercliff'' built halfway up the slope. General George P. Morris was a well-known early 19th century writer, poet and journalist, born in Philadelphia, October 10, 1802. He died in New York City, on July 6, 1864.
