Ink on paper, sight size 9 5/8 x 7 1/4 in. (24.4 x 18.4 cm),framed.
Condition: Rippling, not examined out of frame.
N.B. Morrison, an American modernist who draws on the Chippewa traditions and language of his heritage, was born on the reservation of Grand Portage near Lake Superior in Minnesota. After his graduation from the Minnesota School of Art in 1943, he attended the Art Students League on scholarship. There, he studied with Morris Kantor and absorbed the Abstract Expressionist and Surrealist ideas of the Manhattan artistic milieu. (1) After teaching at various East Coast art schools, he accepted a position in 1970 at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in American Indian Studies and Studio Arts, where he remained until his retirement. (2) A retrospective of his works was held at the National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C., in 2004.
