N.B. Clementine Hunter was a field hand and cook at the Melrose Plantation near Natchitoches, Louisiana who painted scenes of plantation life from the 1930s to the late 1980s. She was encouraged to practice her art by the plantation co-owner, Ms. Cammie Henry, who entertained Southern artists and writers such as William Faulkner at Melrose. (1) Hunter began making domestic crafts and took up painting while in her 50s. She was influenced by two resident artists at Melrose-Francois Mignon and James Register-to paint expressively. The New Orleans Museum of Art held an exhibit of her work as early as 1949, and she received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Northwestern State University of Louisiana, Natchitoches. (2)
