Brass American Plain Surveyor's Compass and a Scale Protractor Rule by Dodd, the compass box lightly engraved JH, with 5-inch dia. silvered dial, eight-point rose part-hatched at the cardinal points, needle ring divided 0-90 in four quadrants, blued steel needle on arm, straight limb with slide-on dovetailed sights, and staff-adaptor, lg. 14, ht. 6 in., in hollowed out wood field case, (glass cracked); a brass protractor scale rule signed Lebbeus Dod, Mendham, divided 0-90-0ยบ, with swing arm and parrallel rule, lg. 12 in.; brass caliper; rosewood parallel rule; and an incomplete drafting set in fitted rosewood case.
Note: The Dodd family of Mendham, New Jersey, were makers of clocks and watches, mathematical and surveying instruments. Lebbeus Dod established an armory for the manufacture and repair of muskets during the Civil War; three of his sons, Abner, Daniel and S. Dodd, are also known for their involvement in the manufacture of surveying instruments. A signed compass by Abner Dodd was sold in Science & Technology, May 2005, lot 1374.
