James S. Baillie, Ingall's Studio, publisher (New York, 1844-1849)

THE GREAT FIGHT, between TOM HOYER & YANKEE SULLIVAN, for $10,000., c. 1849. Lithograph with hand-coloring on paper, sheet size 18 x 20 3/4 in., in a contemporary wooden frame. Condition: Margins 5/8 in. or more, conservation paper support applied to verso, repaired tears, some into image, stains, light toning.

Note: The fight was held February 7, 1849, on Still Pond Heights, Kent County, Maryland. The print shows New York native Tom "Young America" Hyer and the Irish immigrant James "Yankee" Sullivan fighting bare-fisted in a boxing ring in winter on a snow-covered bank with spectators around the ring. The fighters and some spectators are identified in a key below the image on either side of the title. Tom Hyer was victorious after sixteen rounds, the fight purportedly lasted only eighteen minutes.
