Paint-decorated "Ontario Steamboat Co." Box, 1859, original surface, (imperfections),ht. 16, wd. 56 1/4, dp. 20 1/4 in.

Note: The Ontario Steamboat Company, an American firm, owned four ships: the Niagara, Bay State, Ontario, and Cataract. The company's superintendent was Horatio Nelson Throop of Pultneyville, New York. In fact, he is thought to have been the first person born there. The son of a sailor, Throop continued his family's tradition as a ship builder and captain of steamships. Additionally, Captain Throop participated in the Underground Railroad transporting fugitive slaves from Pultneyville to Canada.
