French School, 18th Century

Portrait of the Marquis De LaFayette. Signed and dated "G. Bevalet 1788" l.r. Oil on canvas, 24 x 19 1/2 in., in a later molded and gilt-gesso wood frame. Condition: Relined, minor retouch.

Exhibitions: "Harvard Honors Lafayette," Fogg Museum of Art, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, c. 1944; two pages from the exhibition catalog with the portrait listing and illustration and the loan label are affixed to the reverse.

Note: The artist "G. Bevalet" was probably the father of the naturalist and amateur painter Antoine Germaine Bevalet (French, 1779-1815).

The portrait with unobtrusive minor retouch, one area is about 1 1/2 in. dia. to the background located right and up a bit from the figure''s head, several minor tiny specks of retouch on subject''s face, and several scattered small specks and spots of retouch to the background, relined.
